The Weekend Without Technology
From the day this was assigned, I was well aware that I would not be able to make it the whole weekend without technology. I was visiting my friends in Indiana and arriving very late on Thursday night, when they were already out for the night, so I was texting them to try and figure out where to meet them as well as using my phone for GPS to get down to Indiana. Although the texting and GPS was almost impossible for me to avoid, I managed to steer clear of social media for a majority of the weekend. Being with friends that I don't typically get to see and keeping busy all weekend helped distract me from wanting to update myself on the latest tweets every hour. I did check Instagram a few times out of curiosity on what people were dressed as for Halloween. I mean it was Halloween, come on. Overall, though, while there are certain aspects on my phone that I couldn't avoid, such as the texting and GPS, social media was not something that I felt I absolutely needed to be attached to and I think this exercise made me realize that I use it more out of boredom than anything else.

I also felt it was nearly impossible to go a whole weekend without texting. It's just something that has become a social norm and it's now almost rude to be on the phone talking all the time for a simple response to a question. I managed to not go on Instagram at all this weekend but I was also curious to see everyone's Halloween costumes! My friends and roommates would show me pictures on Facebook and Instagram that it was almost like I was on social media even though it wasn't on my account.
