When I heard about this assignment, I thought it would be completely impossible for me to stay off of my phone except for phone calls. I use my phone so much throughout the day for texting, social media, googling things and just browsing the web that it seems as an essential to my life.
While I tried hard to stay off of my phone, I noticed I would look at it without even thinking about it. Then midway through whatever I was looking at, I would remember the assignment and put it down. I think that hardest part of the challenge to be disconnected is not texting. It has become our generation's way of communicating that it is very hard to not use text messages daily. Both of my parents even texted me about things or questions they had so I saw that it is not only our generation, but a form of talking that everyone uses today. It was also funny to see how people reacted when I called to respond to their text rather than just messaging them back. Many questioned why I did not just text back since usually they texted about something unimportant or a simple question.
I do not see myself disconnecting from my phone in all ways like we were asked to do anytime soon, since the internet is such a big part of our society. I feel as I get older though, I will care less and less and use the internet less and less. I also will be more self-conscious about using my phone when it is unnecessary, as I do not need to look through it, put it down for ten minutes, and do the same thing (usually there's nothing new anyways).
I found it interesting when you noted how you called some people back to answer their text message. I too did this a few times over the weekend and every time I called a friend they'd question why I'm calling them instead of texting them. It really does open your eyes to see how dependent we are on our phones, especially through communicating.
ReplyDeleteCalling friends over the weekend was such a hassle! I totally understand the funny reactions you get when you call someone, because I did it as well this weekend. I just feel that our generation is such a "want it all want it now" generation that texting is the medium for most communication. I also realized how much I mindlessly checked my phone. Its amazing how when you are bored or in a weird situation how much we rely on our phones for some kind of entertainment.
