This assignment made me realize how dependent I am on social
media whether it is to talk to friends, family, or even to take a break from
homework. The hardest part of this assignment was not texting. I threw in the
towel pretty quickly on that one because it was hard to receive a text and have
to call them back just for a quick question they asked. I only used text
messaging this weekend when it was to reply to simple messages otherwise I
relied a lot on calling people. I am proud to say I did not go on Facebook,
Twitter, or Instagram at all this weekend. It was weird going on my computer to
start homework and not immediately open Facebook. I found that I focused more
on my schoolwork and was more productive without relying on my phone as much.
Normally after I finish an assignment, I almost reward myself with a break on
social media. The weirdest part about not using my phone for social media was
in social settings. I noticed that even when I was face to face with my
friends, a lot of the time was spent on their phones and normally I would be
to. It made me realize how often I am “absent in present” in social settings
because when no one is talking or having a conversation I am constantly
scrolling through feeds. I hope this weekend helped me break a bad habit and I
will cut back on my use.
