I thought that this weeks assignment was a lot to ask on a weekend where so many people were counting on being able to communicate with me via multiple different avenues of technology. Because of this, I did not have a very solid performance with regard to refraining from texting/calling. I did try to utilize calling more than usual. I actually found that this made communicating a lot easier in many situations. Instead of having a drawn out confusing text conversation, I realized that it was for the most part much more efficient to actually be able to converse with people.
I did attempt to fully refrain from using social media. This was much easier than what I had imagined. Social media is pretty unimpactful in actually helping to accomplish tasks throughout my everyday life. With that being said, this assignment did awaken me to the fact that I turn to social media extremely often when I am bored. I caught myself scrolling through Facebook or Twitter multiple times, without even having made the conscious effort to use them.
Overall, this project made me realize how much we rely on text messaging and calling to facilitate face to face social interaction, but it also awakened me to the fact that I overuse Facebook to the point that I see things that have zero relevance to my life.
I had the same feelings about the assignment being on Halloween weekend in Madison. I too tried to utilize calling more than usual and got the same results; I was getting more accomplished with phone calls than I would usually get with texting. Social media was easy to disconnect from because it is merely a form of entertainment for me and there was plenty of other things going on this weekend to distract me from using Twitter/Facebook.
