The Downfalls of Technology in Our Society

To start off on my journey to find a book to read for the project, I began by searching for "information society" on Amazon.com. However, I didn't like the results and found myself at a loss, so I turned over to the "technology" category on Amazon, and I found more of what I was interested in.

Three books I found that interested me were:
Dataclysm: Who We Are (When We Think No One's Looking), A Million First Dates, and The Glass Cage.

After searching on review websites, I found myself mostly intrigued by The Glass Door by Nicholas Carr. This book discusses the process of automation and the type of society that our nation is turning into. For example, it addresses the utilization of machinery and how the internet is diminishing us as human beings. The reviews were thorough and many people commented on the book's thought-provoking ability.

The Dataclysm book was interesting to me because it gave a framework of how we can tell who a person is based on the amounts of "likes" they have on facebook, as well as what type of person they are on facebook based off of the same information. To me, it's interesting that something as simple as social media has such a deeper reality into who we are.

I chose interest in  A Million First Dates because I still think the concept of online dating is mind-boggling. I think it's interesting that over time dating has become something so casual and surface level that someone thinks that they can meet the love of their life over information on a computer screen. The book discusses the concept of how you can portray yourself any which way you choose, and that's the aspect that I totally agree with.

After taking all things into consideration (reviews, comments, book requirements, and the publication date), I decided to choose The Glass Cage. It held my interest the most. From my experience, I think our generation is becoming way too consumed by technology. I hate the fact that when I'm out to lunch with someone, I look around and everyone seems to be staring at their mobile devices instead of the person across from them.

  1. Hey Raechel! I also thought this book seemed really interesting but then saw that you'd already picked it. I'll be interested to know what you think about it!
