Disconnected: Youth, New Media, and the Ethics Gap

Upon reading the assignment description I had no idea as to what I would search. On Amazon.com, I tried a search using “smartphones”, “society”, and “digital” as key words and found some very interesting books. The focal point of the books I found was the societal changes based on technology. Smart Phones Dumb People? , Always On, and Disconnected: Youth, New Media, and the Ethics Gap are the three books that caught my eye.
With all of these books being published so recently it was a difficult task trying to find good reviews. Of the reviews available and the descriptions of the books, I chose Disconnected: Youth, New Media, and the Ethics Gap by Carrie James. A large portion of this book comes from numerous interviews with people ranging from ages 10-25 and focusing on the psychological components of their technology use. Overall this book seemed the most interesting and given that we are learning about similar societal topics in this course I think it was the best choice.

The process of choosing which book to read was a lot harder than I anticipated. After reading all of the descriptions and reviews I had something I wanted to learn from each book I found. It was unfortunate that none of these books had scholarly reviews on the databases I searched. Finally after considering the main idea of each book it was pretty obvious which one I was really interested in. I look forward to reading Disconnected: Youth, New Media, and the Ethics Gap.

  1. Brett, I was surprised with how hard it was to find a book too. I suppose that these books being published so recently makes it difficult for them to have a lot of exposure and reviews already. I found it was easiest to find scholarly reviews on books first and then find those on Amazon as opposed to the other way around. That book sounds interesting and is definitely relevant to issues and topics today.
