Memex

I read an online blog post responding to Bush's article. This post gave a brief background of the article and the time period when Bush was developing his ideas. The author talked about how Bush was able to look at what we needed as a society and predict what we would eventually develop in order to satisfy these needs.

In this blog post, the author also talks about how accurately Bush was able to predict not only where technology and computers would be today, but also how dependent our society would be on them. They gave the example of how reliant we are on our cell phones and laptops. Each of these devices could be described as a "memex" as they both store articles, books, music and allow us to communicate via texting, phone calls, and email. I believe the fact that we are overly dependent on technology as a society. Personally, I know that it is hard for me to go for more than a couple of hours without checking my phone or computer because I fear that I will miss an important email/phone call/text. The author of the blog post also discusses how we have become "hooked" on the instant. This is also accurate as we see that almost everything is accessible with the click of a button. Movie rental stores have become less relevant because streaming movies online has become more convenient. Bookstores sell less hard copies of books because it is easier for someone to simply log onto amazon and buy a book instantly.
