Jillian Burnette's Online Identity

I thought it was really interesting doing the geodemographic analysis of myself because I actually learned a lot of shocking facts about my hometown. I actually do not come up when I search for my phone number and address. When I searched for my phone number, it showed that I was from the Milwaukee even though I'm from a town about 40 minutes outside of downtown Milwaukee. What I found most interesting was when I searched myself on White Pages; I did not come up at all so I searched under my mom's name to see if I showed up under related people. It was interesting because my sister showed up but not me.

After doing a social networking analysis on myself, I realized that I actually come up quite frequently. For example, my twitter account shows up on the first page when I search for my name under MySpace and LinkedIn, even though my actual MySpace and LinkedIn account didn't even show up. On Facebook, I was the second person to come up when I searched for my name. I'd like to think that it's because my name is not as common but it could be due to the fact my  privacy settings aren't set as they should be. When I Googled myself under Jillian Burnette only my Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest account showed up but when I added Oconomowoc into the search a bunch of pictures and articles came up from high school soccer.

After searching through all these websites and Google, I don't think I have created a negative image for myself online. I think a geodemographic firm would see I am a typical college student that values my family, soccer, and have an unusual obsession with dogs. I think the scariest part of this activity was when I searched my name and looked under the images: there were pictures of people that I went to high school with that I wasn't even in. It makes me wonder what pictures of me show up underneath other peoples' names.

  1. I also clicked the images tab when I googled my name, and a few pictures of me were on there, but so many that were not me. There were pictures of children from the camp that I work at on there, and there were also pictures of one of my friends who is also named Kelsey. It is kind of scary that our names can be linked to so many different things on the internet. It makes me want to filter through my profiles of online social media sites. It just shows how powerful the internet actually is, and how connected we are to other people, or how connected other people are to us, without even knowing it.
