Bush’s article about Memex was such an accurate prediction
of the World Wide Web that we have today, with a few differences. Besides those
differences, the purpose of the Memex, being able to search for and find
information regarding basically anything, is exactly what the Internet is used
for today. It is incredible that in 1945, someone was able to dream up and
predict such a vital aspect of our daily life today.
I read an article written by Steven Johnson in response to
Bush’s Memex, and Johnson was very impressed by the Memex. His article was
written in the late 90s, so it is not even “up to date” with the current
technology that we have today in terms of the Internet. Johnson said he
believes that Bush gave birth to the hyperlink, in theory. Although Bush’s idea
of a hyperlink is what he calls “trails” connecting the user to different
material related to the topic he or she is dealing with, it is very similar to
the links that we have today. It is all about having constant access to
information, and that aspect of life today is very valued.
