Memex Reaction

I read a blog post responding to Bush's Memex. The response focused on the idea that Bush's ideas of "linking" information and associations creating chains of information. The author argued that online websites such as Wikipedia are great examples of websites that store great amounts of information that can connect a user to related topics.

I think this example of Wikipedia was strong because it is one the websites that I find most useful and does offer great links and ideas for further research. One area that the author did not mention, but that I think relates to Wikipedia is the fact that it is user contributed information. While Bush does mention putting actual encyclopedia's online, Wikipedia is unique because it is written by its users. However, this does not hurt Bush's idea of Memex because he originally mentions Memex as it relates to reading his peers in the science communities findings and research. Bush mentions how time consuming it is to read all of the findings and stay up to date and suggests that Memex could assist in storing that data and would still be easily called up whenever it is required. I think this describes Wikipedia perfectly and is something that this blogger should have mentioned.
