Memex

After reading Dr. Vannevar Bush's article, "As We May Think,"  I was shocked to find out how accurate his predictions of what is now known as, The World Wide Web. There are difference of course, but with the technology Bush had to come to these conclusions, the concepts are very similar. It is a shame that Bush didn't live to see what his work had come to, but now that I know I will now look at the World Wide Web differently knowing that the idea of it came way before our time.

I found a video that shows and explains how the Memex machine worked and how it was used. I found the video intriguing because I had never seen a Memex before. After watching the video and learning more about it, the similarities to the World Wide Web are vast. The first time I watched the video the first thing I thought of was Google. The Memex could have books, encyclopedias and anything you wanted it to store in it. They talked about how you would type in a specific number that was connected to what you wanted to find, and that immediately took my brain to our modern day search engines. Also they mentioned that you were able to look up history on the machine and connect those 2 together, even being able to add your own comments to the pages. Today we have hard drives that are able to store what we want, but in the Memex there was a drawer of microfilms that stored the information. I was extremely fascinated to see the many similarities between the Memex and today's modern World Wide Web.
