Through my investigation of the usage of "smart phone" in various areas of the information society, I've come to the conclusion that the meaning behind the term has indeed, evolved. In the usage as early as the beginning of the 1980s, a "smart phone" was described as one that took itself and merged with a computer to transport various types of communications: sound, video, etc. In another article, the use of smart phone was used to describe early cell phone technology, where a wireless phone was considered 'smart'. And yet another article discussed the times of dial-up internet and a phone jack where the phone would need to be plugged in to function. These are very different than the present day definitions.
Now a days, we take the term smart phone as one that connects to the internet, has various app capabilities, high tech cameras, etc. The articles that discussed the most present use of the term pointed to the bill-paying capabilities of a smart phone. I find that incredibly interesting because in the earliest use of a smart phone, bill paying was manual via the postal system. To think that it can now be done on a phone is incredible. The definition of smart phone has evidently changed drastically.
It's interesting to see how the smart phone has evolved in the past years. Who knows what the smart phone has in store for us in the next decade or so! It even seems like the smart phone is changing into something new and better each year!
ReplyDeleteIt was interesting to read about how the definition of smart phone has changed. It is crazy that phones have gone from simply a communication device to one that can access the internet, play games, and even play music.
