Prelinger Archives: Century 21 Calling

https://archive.org/details/Century21964

I thought this film was most interesting because of how accurately it predicted the future. I found it through the keywords "communication: telephone".

Most of the features introduced in the film regarding telephones in fact became a reality. They suggested the idea of a three-way call, call waiting, and speed dial. The idea that struck me the most was call waiting. In the film they proposed the idea of a beeping noise when someone was on the other line. Now, in the 21st century, this is exactly what happens with call waiting.

I think that as a society, we can learn a lot from this film. In 1962, the creators of this film envisioned a 21st century equipped with some of the telephone features we have today. Personally, when I make predictions about the future, I don’t realistically believe they are going to happen. It is fun to think about how our information society can advance, but with that being said, I can’t picture what it would feel like to live in a world where my predictions came true 50 years later.

It is important to learn about the advancement of information societies. Knowing where we once where can really help you understand what is possible in the future. Who would’ve known that in just a couple decades after the release of this film, there would be those exact telephone advancements.

  1. I really like how you found a video that is based off of our readings that we had for last week! I agree that it's scary to think how accurate people were in predicting the future but at the same time it's pretty remarkable! Makes me think that Daniel Bell's concept of futurology during postindustrialism was really true.

Another thing I thought was interesting from the video was being able to call home to turn on the oven or the air conditioner. This is kind of what we can do today with air conditioning although it's through Apps on our cell phones that we are able to do this which makes it even easier than a phone call.

  2. This was a really interesting video to watch, and I agree with what Jillian said about how it is amazing what people can predict about the future. As I was watching the video, especially when they talked about call waiting, I was thinking about how normal it is for us to hear a tone if someone is calling you while you are on the phone, but how back then that was a huge! I think it is easy for people in our society to take something as simple as a call waiting dial tone for granted, because we have been privileged with this technological advancement our entire lives.
I also really liked the part of the video that introduced, what we call today, speed dialing. Before we had smart phones, you could program a contact to simply be one number to dial out, just as they mentioned in the video with the mother and daughter calling her grandma by dialing two numbers. Today, we have come even further through the use of smart phones, and all you have to do is tap the person's name you want to call.
