Prelinger Archives: Television Tomorrow

This film was very interesting, especially in its regard to the predictions of the future of television post World War II. Televised moving images were invented in the first couple decades of the 1900s, and it was not until World War II that the television industry started to expand.

One very interesting feature of television that the film introduced was the concept of on the spot news. I think many people today would not even think twice about having the ability to receive news from anywhere in the world at any time, but during the early to mid 1900s, this was a new concept. This film spoke about how television stations started to create portable stations on wheels that would allow them to travel and report news on the go. Viewers would now have the ability to have a “court side seat” at sporting events, or even governmental meetings, as the film pointed out.

The expansion of television expected to create over 300,000 jobs in the first five years, and has created many more jobs since. Information technology inventions are so important for the economy as a whole, as is shown through television. It is also important to realize that within the technological society that we live, there are many more advances in information technology to come that will probably be sustained for a long time as well.

  2. I think it is interesting how this video highlighted the fact that the television was one of the many information technologies that came about because of the need to communicate news in a more entertaining and informational manner.
Its also interesting to note the correlation between the expansion of the TV and WWII. It really shows how conflicts develop along with the need for new technologies to address these conflicts.

  3. You brought up a good point, nowadays we don't think of on the spot news as being out of the ordinary, but in the past it was only a dream. It surprised me how accurate the predictions in this film were and I'm curious as to see where we go in the future with technology in televisions. It was really cool to see their visions for the future of relaying information through the concept of "news" channels. The way that the video explained the need for a more attention-grabbing medium, such as on the spot news, really caught my attention because they mastered that in the present day with on the spot news.
